Sepic River Eco Tour

We are offering a 7 day Sepic River Tour package from the 8th -14th of September. Our experienced guide will take the team along the Sepic River and experience the majesty that surrounds the Sepic River.

Trekkers will fly to Port Moresby on the 7th of September where they will be met by Investa Treks Staff, and then transferred to the Gateway Hotel for the night.

The group will be briefed on what will happen over the coming days, and you will be free to relax for the night.

Trekkers can also leave gear at the Gateway to pick up after returning from the tour.

Day 1 

After breakfast, the group will meet with our Head Guide and team ready for the Tour. The group will then be transferred to the domestic airport for the flight to Wewak.

Upon landing the group will be met by our Sepic River guide, and travel to town to the shops for a short stop for trekkers to get any last minute items.

From there the group will travel through the ranges and plains for 4 hours and arrive at Pagwi, where the group will be transferred by the waiting motorised canoe, with stops and designated villages allowing trekkers the opportunity to experience the local culture of the Sepic.

Trekkers get to observe:

  • at Yanzan - Orators stool and Croc dance masks.
  • at Palimbe - Mans House (culture centre) with sacred sculptured items.
  • at Kanganamun - Local culture centre that is higher than others, supporting one-side sitting benches and masks as well as other local items.

In the late afternoon the group will again board the motorised canoes and move downstream and overnight at Kamanimbit Guesthouse.

Day 2

The group will share together over breakfast before boarding at 7:30am  and continue downstream and enter the Karawari and Korosmeri Rivers by one entrance and move upstream south west into the Blackwater Lakes and Lake Kovenm-mas.

What to observe:

  • at Blackwater Lakes: The five local villages are settled on Marshy, songe like surface of the wetland. As you walk, in parts you feel the tremor of ground move around you, reminding you of the wetland that envelopes the village.
  • at Lake Kovenmas: This lake is lodged between the mountains with access by a stream or waterway leading to Blackwater Lakes. A mission station is situated on top of of the hill overlooking the lake.
  • at Kangingara: The Village and Catholic church is situated on a hill top overlooking the Blackwater Lakes.

The group will overnight at Kovenmas Guesthouse.

Day 3

The group after breakfast, board the out board powered canoe, and follow the same route out north east to the Sepic River and continue upstream to Palimbe. This day will be 10th September and will overnight at Palimbe Guesthouse.

Day 4

The group will observe and experience the Middle Sepic Cultural Show and resort back to the guesthouse, and may travel Chambri Lakes.

What to observe:

  • at Aibom: The people are renown for their pottery and various art forms with clay.
  • at Chambri: The group will visit the famous Mens House with display of handcrafts, traditional dance & bamboo flute music can also be performed upon request.
  • at Timbun: The Island was taken by conquest during tribal war period in 1930's by people of Kandingai. You can climb a mountain with a flat rock surface on the peak which marks an ancient village site, to observe a panoramic view of the lake. 

After island visits the group will head back to Kandingai for the night.

Day 5

After breakfast, the group will board the canoe and cruise eastward along village for around 10 minutes and take a 30 minute bush walk to do some birdwatching & do a bit of fishing, and arrive back at Kandingai in the afternoon. The group will overnight again and share with the locals.

Day 6

The group will board the canoe early for the last time and move upstream to Pagwi around 40 minutes, to board a passenger vehicle and return to Wewak for an afternoon flight.
The flight back to POM will be a little bit of a wait and upon landing, the group will be transferred back to the Gateway Hotel.
The group may share over a meal at the Gateway and remember their stories and adventures of the past few days.
 

Last Day (14th September)

The trekkers are free to return to Australia at any stage and will be transferred to the airport for International flights home.
Trekkers on later flights will have the opportunity to enjoy the hotel while they wait for flights.

The tour will continue and features will include the Middle Sepic Festival, Visiting designated local villages and sites of importance, cruise lakes and visit island villages, observe local pottery at potters island, and also enjoy spectacular birdwatching.

On the 14th of September the group will return to Wewak for the return trip to Port Moresby where the group will be transferred to the Gateway Hotel for the last night.

Investa Trekkers will meet together and share a meal to discuss their adventures.

Investa Treks staff will thank trekkers for their contribution and for a great time together.
